Senior Practitioner Families and Prison
The Northern Ireland Prison Service recognises the importance of positive family engagement for people in custody, both in terms of maintaining family relationships and supporting people to desist from future crime. NIACRO in partnership with the NIPS shall deliver Early Intervention family support through Family Liaison Workers (FLW) in each establishment. The FLW’s will help to build positive outcomes for children and young people who have a family member in prison and for their families.
This systems change programme recognises that:
- Families (particularly children or younger siblings) of prisoners face considerable need throughout the period of an imprisonment (and beyond) and must be ‘picked up’ to ensure their needs are addressed before they escalate; and
- Families have a vital role to play in the rehabilitation of prisoners.
